Eternal Sermon is Kalie Krause’s meditation on Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum—tucked into her home in the Ohio River Valley. Here, in this place, Kalie began walking alongside death and reclaimed her affinity for life. Spring Grove became a repository of interactions with the world next to ours and a refuge where she found her soul. The camera entered as a tool to document its essence and reach with the limbs of trees, flowers, and the human community. When viewing Kalie’s work it is impossible not to follow her into rooms of the forest, forms of the Kentucky grass, and graves of the past. These photographs offer a breach into the world Kalie sees—glimmers of the beyond, and a hope to bring it all together. Following her we are crawling, stumbling, and leaping into the visible and invisible family of things—listening closely to her Eternal Sermon.

This full-length photo book is a testament to the power of place and how to learn to truly belong to it. The subjects of the photographs are imprinted on Kalie's soul, just as Kalie's soul is now imprinted on Spring Grove Cemetery. From over a thousand negatives, comes this edition of 90 images, which have been chosen and sequenced intentionally with story, myth, and archiving in mind. Within the pages also lies a poem, from which Kalie drew inspiration for the book and the title, along with an Epilogue written by Kalie containing history of Spring Grove and her personal experience in the cemetery. Black Flower is proud that the cover design is an adaptation from an actual gravestone which lies on the property of Spring Grove Cemetery, which Ava Doyle created into a woodblock and will be gold foiled onto the green linen cover.
This page is a pre-order for the book. Books will print in January 2025 and ship in February. We appreciate your patience as we run a small, independent, soul-centered publishing house. February is only an estimate and it could be longer, as things out of our control can inevitably come up.
